Shareware
Shareware is an alternative method of purchasing a license to use a particular software program. With shareware, you download and try out a program before purchasing a license (also referred to as “paying the registration fee” or simply “registering”). It is similar to “rent-to-own”, only the rental is free.
There are thousands of shareware programs available. Some of the most popular web sites for shareware are:
Shareware works through honesty. Shareware authors trust their customers. Shareware authors trust that if their customers like their product and plan to use it on a regular basis, they will send the author financial support as a reward for a job well done and as support for future shareware efforts.
Sometimes, shareware authors may modify their software to "encourage" honesty using methods like:
- A time-limited evaluation period
- A "nag screen" that forces the (unregistered) user to wait and read about shareware before using the software.
- Additional features that can only be enabled after the registration fee has been paid.
Shareware is not freeware. Shareware authors hope to and even expect to be compensated for their efforts. Etresoft’s policy is to provide a product that can be downloaded and used free of charge. Etresoft’s products may use any and all the methods listed above to encourage customers to pay the registration fee. All of Etresoft’s products are fully functional, even if no registration fees have been paid. Etresoft provides free e-mail support to all customers, both registered and un-registered. Registered customers will, of course, have priority.
