Read the story of EtreRef FR.
EtreRef FR is a set of French dictionaries for the new Apple iPad. The following dictionaries are currently available:
- Le Dictionnaire de l'Académie Française, 7ème Édition (1835)
- Le Dictionnaire de l'Académie Française, 8ème Édition (1935)
Both dictionaries are included inside the app itself. There is no need for an internet connection.
Requirements:
- Any Apple iPad.
Installation:
- Download via the Apple AppStore.
Usage:
- Run the EtreRef FR app.
- Type a word or partial word into the search bar.
- Tap the Search button or select one of the matched words in the result list.
- You do not need to specify any diacritic characters. All matches will be returned. If you do specify diacritic characters, your match list will be limited to those words with exact matches.
- Some words are present in both dictionaries. Tap the desired dictionary button to see the different definitions in each edition.
Other Notes:
- EtreRef FR includes a total of 60226 definitions in both dictionaries. This includes 29009 definitions in the 1835 dictionary and 31217 definitions in the 1935 edition. Across both dictionaries, there are 39256 unique words.
- For words that exist in both dictionaries, you can easily see the evolution of the words' meanings during the hundred years between each dictionary.
- Many of the masterpieces of French literature were written between 1835 and 1935. These dictionaries will give you the words and definitions in common usage during the time that these works were created. You may not find that in a modern dictionary.
